Moomin; Teaching misogyny, cynicism and pessimism to children since 1991

I believe vederlicht might have something to say about that. Take it away, dear~

Misogyny: we have a female craftswoman who lives independently through the coldest of winters, can repair pretty much anything and always knows the right things to say. We have a kickass mother who can take care of her children without flipping out once, not even when her house is flooding, when a comet is about to smash the earth or when scary creatures come a-knocking. We have a little girl who’s small enough to fit inside your pants pocket, yet has the guts to bite people five times her size and call them rude names whenever she feels like they deserve it or when they mess with her friends. Misogyny, uh-huh. Yeah, Moominmamma likes to take care of her family and bake them yummy pancakes. Oh my!

Cynicism: For once it’s a children’s series that isn’t all about rainbows, singing flowers and unicorns XD A little mature-ness won’t hurt children at all.

Pessimism: While Moomins certainly isn’t the happiest of all series, it certainly has its very cheery moments. Epic autumn parties with pancakes, jam, punch and fireworks and dancing till the late hours. More food than you can ever eat. Exciting adventures and never a dull day. Yes, it has depressing or sad moments, but once again, it’s good to give kids a little reality check every so often.

As for the picture, Muskrat isn’t really the best role model from the Moominverse. He’s a bitter, old poot who believes that pretty much EVERYTHING in life is useless. Even eating, sleepng or just having fun in general.

Oh, and Moomins haven’t been teaching it since 1991. They’ve been doing it since 1945 :P
